The catalytic converter is responsible for reducing amount of harmful gases produced by engine. Without its heat shield, catalyst would be damaged by high temperatures imposed by exhaust system.
Heat shields can also be found in other areas of vehicle. For example, brakes, transmission, and differentials may have heat shields to protect them from heat generated by their movement. Heat shields are also used on engine oil pan to reduce amount of heat that escapes from underbody of vehicle.
In short, a car can have anywhere from two to five heat shields depending on its make and model, but usually there are three shields in total.
