10 Essential V-Ray Material Setup Skills

After reading the visualization, you can definitely take it to the next level

Graphic overview

1. Material color

When using a material, you can change its color to better match your design. This can be done in two ways.

One way is to color it in using SketchUp's own color palette.

This method does not allow you to see instant updates in the Vray Interactive Render window and the renderer needs to be restarted

Another method is to use color correction. Right click the material diffuse texture slot, nest a color correction and change the color of the material using the options slider below.

This method will not display changes in the SketchUp viewport, but it will update in real time during interactive rendering

And this method can be used with any map, for example, using it in a specular and specular map, you can change the specularity and specularity of a material.

2. Material binding

Sometimes when rendering you will see that the material is very small. When you want to scale it, you will find that you can't because there is no texture file.

To solve this problem, you can find "Binding" in material edit panel, there are three texture modes:

Auxiliary texture, which is a typical texture that Vray creates for you to represent the scale;

Automatically, in this mode Vray will automatically look for a texture inside the material and use it as a linked texture;

Custom, in this mode you can copy any texture to any texture slot and paste it into the texture slot as an instance;

3. Replace Material

Use Replace All Links if you want to replace a material and its reference material in the scene.

4. Proper use of glass materials

For example, there are 4 squares that look almost the same, but only 1 of them renders properly during test rendering.

If you want to use the glass material correctly, you need to check: 1. Whether the glass has a thickness; 2. Is it directed outward;

5. Transparent background through the window

Another issue with the glass material is that sometimes the background of the window is opaque, even if the image was saved as a .png.

Select the alpha channel in the VFB window, and then choose Color+Alpha in the Refraction Influence Channels docker.

Using this method to accurately select a window area in the scene and add a background in PS post-processing to solve this problem. How to add a realistic background in PS, you can read the following article——< /p>

Same PS, what is the difference between you and others at a later stage?

6. Avoid repeating textures

Avoid multiple duplicates of components in the scene as they are copies of each other, the textures will be in the same positions and the objects will look exactly the same, which is unrealistic.

Right click to make one of the components unique, then adjust the position of the material

7. Random material

Material randomization is a technique used to create color variations. First select the material you want to use, right click on the diffuse texture slot and select the nested "Multi-Sub".

Try different modes in "Get ID Source", here "Random by hostname" seems to work well.

Use the slider to adjust the colors so they don't change too much

8. Tile repair

Material tiling problems usually occur when the material is repeatedly tiled over a large surface that is larger than the texture size.

To fix this, under Texture Location, change the type to Map Source, then add a new UVW position to UV Placement Source. And check Stochastic tiling.

9. Proper use of displacement maps

If you used a displacement map but it didn't render, first make sure your material already has a displacement map, you can read this guide first—

Why is other people's rendering more realistic than yours when using the same Vray material?

Select the surface of the material and make it a group. You can see that no material has been assigned to the group, so we're selecting the same material as the surface to populate the group, and you can see it's updated here.

If you have a displacement file, you can add a displacement map using New Displacement Geometry in the Vray Objects toolbar.

10. Delete unused content

This button clears the file of unused materials to reduce the load on the model.
